What is the Bit Depth of an Image? | Image Bit Depth Explained | 8-Bit vs. 16-Bit

Same thing in music. I work in 16 bit and my final output is usually higher. That is simply because, I have an expectation that I DEGRADE sounds on purpose to get a desired effect. I am an abstract creator (note I don’t use the term artist). You will never see my end result “clean cut.”

…almost everything I create has “happy accidents” that I DEPEND on happening before I even go into a project. When I playback a song of mine after not hearing it for a few years, I am just as much amazed at how I got a particular sound as anyone else, and I can’t even recreate it.

Like Guitar Bizarre, I just woke up at 2 AM and couldn’t go to sleep and I hit the record button and started doing what I “felt” and bounced the track down within an hour. I was perfectly happy with that. I wouldn’t make a whole album of that but that was the finishing touch that I needed to say, “hey, I’m just goofing off, don’t take me serious.”

I mostly work in 8bit because I do abstract imagery and often it “adds” to what I am trying to accomplish. I have come to expect the degradation in color fluidity. HOWEVER, when I know it is something that I want to print, I do start out and in 16 bit and degrade the perceived quality manually if the piece calls for it.
